Crafty parents, it’s time to break out your knitting needles – there’s baby hats to make.
Health officials from the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) have put out the call for at least 4,300 handmade purple baby hats by Oct. 1. Through a partnership with the National Center for Shaken Baby Syndrome, their campaign aims to raise awareness of the Period of PURPLE crying to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome.
PURPLE is an acronym to describe the period in which all babies cry more than any other time in their lives from the age of about 2 weeks to 3 or 4 months. It’s totally normal and not their fault, but it’s the main trigger for Shaken Baby Syndrome, when an adult forcefully shakes an infant or young child and causes a serious brain injury. This period is characterized by:
- Peak of crying
- Unexpected times, not predictable
- Resists soothing
- Pain-like face even when baby is not in pain
- Long-lasting crying, sometimes 5 or more hours
- Evening crying times
